Sewing a set of Zill Mufflers

This coming year I want to add Zills to my own dance - something I have done in the past a bit but just not enough. I started Sahira's New Year Challenge yesterday because I know she is a Zill addict and that there would be plenty of zill options.

To help stop me feeling inhibited, and also going a little deaf (a real concern as they have such high tones and you bring them pretty close to your ears when moving) I constructed myself some Zill mufflers. A lot of the one's I have seen in the past have been crochet or knitted, which is a craft I have left to others as I have such a knack for splitting the yarn and making only triangles.

I add a lot of circular frills to my costumes (I also do flamenco so I’m a bit obsessed with them) but to make them you are always left with a small circle. As one Flamenco skirt can demand 100 or more circular frills to be cut I am always looking for ways to use them up…  As luck would have it, these centres of the frill that I don’t use are about 18cms, which is roughly 1 cm wider (all the way around) than my zills. I used valour so that it wouldn’t fray and stretched the elastic as I sewed it to bring the edges in.

To make your own;

Measure the across the centre of your zills to get the diameter (in cm’s)

Add 2 cm’s to this measurement.

Half this measurement to get your radius. Use a compass or a piece of string anchored in the centre to make a circle. Best to make a paper pattern using this technique first but if you are confident you can do it straight on fabric.

Get some non fray fabric - knitted stretchy fabrics are good for this.

Cut our 4 identical circles.

Get some narrow elastic, and stretch it as you carefully sew it to the edges of the back of the fabric.

Voila one Zill Muffler! Do it another 3 times for a full set.
