Drumming  Classes – Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need any drumming experience to join?
Not at all! This class is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have tried drumming before. We start with simple rhythms and build up step by step, each added step is optional and can take some time to master!

2. Do I need my own darbuka drum?
If you have your own darbuka please use it, but other kinds of goblet shaped drums such as Djembe's are good to use if you don't have one. You can always start with a cardboard box if you like, it is the same principle.

3. What is a darbuka?
A darbuka is a goblet-shaped hand drum widely used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean music. It produces both deep bass sounds and sharp tones using different hand techniques.

4. What will I learn in the class?
You’ll learn basic hand techniques, traditional Middle Eastern rhythms, timing, coordination,  how to play simple rhythm patterns, add ornaments and make up your own "songs" for dancers to dance too.

5. Is the class suitable for beginners?
Yes! The class is beginner-friendly and designed to make learning rhythm fun and accessible for everyone.

6. What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to sit and move easily. Most of the class will be spent sitting with the drum on your lap.

7. Is drumming difficult to learn?
Not at all! Everyone has a natural sense of rhythm. With a little practice, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can start playing satisfying rhythms.

8. How long is the class?
60 minutes for my Zoom online class.  In person workshop are anything from a 15 minute taster session to 2 or 3 hours.

9. Is drumming good for wellbeing?
Yes! Hand drumming can be relaxing, energising, and a great way to relieve stress and turn off your brain. If you are in a live class there is nothing like the feel of the beat and the connection with others through rhythm.

9. Can I try a session?

Yes here is a video link to get you started or join my Patreon channel as a Free Member to get some introductory videos.

10. What if I miss a class?
You can request the 7 day catch up video if you can't make the live time. If you have paid for a block and do not request the video that week will roll over. The drum classes are very laid back so you can easily dip in and out.

11. How do I join a class?
