Flamenco Class – Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need dance experience to join a flamenco class?
You might like to try my free taster videos; Flamenco Taster and Dancing in 12's first to help you get started, or book a one to one session with me, as I am currently only running an All Levels Class. But beginners are welcome! I never assume knowledge and you’ll learn the basics step-by-step in a supportive and relaxed environment. I always advise people not to worry too much about doing the arms with the basic steps as I kept my hands firmly on my hips for several years when I started. If you are a complete beginner please join close to the start of the term to insure you get the full choreography break down.

2. What should I wear to class?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. A long skirt is lovely for flamenco and makes you feel the part but it is not required. Shoes with a small heel and a sturdy sole work best to get the real feel of Flamenco but I am currently teaching at home an can't make much noise so I wear socks and no shoes. Flamenco was orginally done barefoot.

3. Do I need special flamenco shoes?
Not for your first class. Many students start with character shoes or shoes with a small heel. If you continue, you may want to invest in flamenco shoes for better sound and technique.

4. Is flamenco suitable for beginners or people who feel uncoordinated?
Absolutely. Flamenco is about rhythm, expression and confidence as much as technique. Everyone starts somewhere, and classes are designed to build coordination and rhythm gradually.

5. What will I learn in a flamenco class?
Classes typically include:
-
Basic flamenco footwork (zapateado)
-
Arm and hand movements (braceo)
-
Rhythm and clapping (palmas)
-
Posture and flamenco styling
-
Short choreographies
-

6. Is flamenco a good workout?
Yes! Flamenco strengthens the legs, core, and posture while improving coordination and musicality. It can also be very empowering and expressive.

7. Can I join if I’m not very fit?
Yes. Flamenco can be adapted to different fitness levels, and you can take movements at your own pace.

8. Will I have to perform?
Performing is optional. Some students enjoy sharing what they’ve learned in informal performances, while others prefer to dance just for fun and personal enjoyment.

9. Is flamenco only for women?
Not at all. Flamenco is for everyone. People of all genders, ages and backgrounds can enjoy learning this powerful and expressive dance and are welcome at my classes.

10. What if I miss a class?
You can request the 7 day catch up video if you can't make the live time. If you have paid for a block and do not request the video that week will roll over.
